Some things to learn

27 yr old guy-->Multiple sclerosis-->lives alone-->mother died when he was 21 and father remarried-->unable to walk-->studying in college and is graduating this year.

Only when we come across people like this we think how great our life is. I learn everyday from my patients. Often we get so caught up in the every day grind of living we forget to truly appreciate what we have. I'm not just talking about a home, food and clothes.

I am so proud of him and I really hope he has a bright future. As I think about his “bright future” tears automatically start forming in my eyes. Sometimes I think god if not fair with everyone. I wish I had the power to increase his life span by 10 more years.

***Multiple sclerosis is degenerative disease which affects the central nervous system. No known cure.

I heard this radio jockey commenting on the question 'What would you ask if I have a chance to ask God one question?' And he answered, 'Why do you give children terminal diseases?' I was contemplating on it for a few minutes. It kind of dawned on me. As life is a learning experience, we are to learn from their lives. We are to be appreciative of what we have. We are to give to those who don't have much. We are to be kind and loving to those who are not as lucky as we are. I would rather not say that they are not BLESSED. I believe that we are all blessed. We are all put in our respective places to accomplish something and to make a difference.

If anyone who is less fortunate than us can accomplish so much why can't we do the same and go further? We underestimate ourselves and our abilities.

I wish him the very best in everything that he does!!

This reminds me of someone I met when I was a kid.. Similar story.. the point is, they're much better individuals in spite of all these shortcoming. At least, I know he was a much better person than I ever could be.

Sometimes when I think of these kind of tragic situations, I wonder why God does all these things... Having a control on anything and everything in this world, why is he doing something that actually makes ppl feel sad!

God Bless everyone!

i can only say that you have a nice heart kavitha. In fact, you are such a caring human being it must be really tough on you being a doc.

We see so many patients evry single day and we just stand there helpless. Wudn we be so glad to do anything to ease a patient's pain?

The wonderful lesson that i learnt from looking at such patients is"Count your blessings".

Its just that God gives greater ability and strong passion for achievement to people and takes away one or two things from such people. God is THE business man! We cannot have everything! No one known to this world had had everything in life!

But I would have people struggle for money rather than struggle with health... its a bad trade-off!

kavi..
I think it's because they may not be fully aware of their conditions. The kids' worlds are so small compared to ours and they dont tend to think big!!

When we see the sufferings of others (for example, this person), our problems and issues are nothing!!! Really..we have nothing much to complain about!!

I think the world is full of fighters, they only need a chance and opening to come out. some of the less fortunate and not less fortunate at all, they plan their lives and they just live to avoid the problems by focusing on winning. thats how to face challenges.

the bestest thing in the world is when people really try rather than give excuses. u wrote a beautiful post.

You are so right! I work with people with spinal cord injury everyday and it pains my heart to see them go through with their life very cheerful with just their upper bodies. Whenever I feel sad, I tell myself by saying that I should be very thankful to have the full use of all my limbs.

I know I sound a li'l heartless when i say this (the doctors are a little puzzled-medical marvel they call me) but every time some one talks of a person with a terminal disease or a disability or someone who has died in an accident with this "Oh!poor him" or "How brave!" or "What strength of spirit", (the winner of these meaningless platitudes is "God is testing them" sorts), I feel like yelling at them to stop. Height of KITSCH. What arrogance to pity someone. I'll not elaborate... but good one about bright future and tears.

I have no doubts that ur emotions are genuine... from what u have written, they sound absolutely true. I just wanted to give another perspective.

Hey! btw, thanks for visiting my blog and commenting.

Kitsch has a usage outside of art, where it is defined best by Milan Kundera in the Unbearable Lightness of Being.

I quote:
“Kitsch causes two tears to flow in quick succession. The first tear says: How nice to see children running on the grass! The second tear says: How nice to be moved, together with all mankind, by children running on the grass! It is the second tear that makes kitsch kitsch.”

On an aside, I am terribly pleased to see u take my comments rather well.
